While Verstappen’s podium helped maintain his title charge, the pace of the RB22 was visibly lacking in the final stages of the race. Teammate Liam Lawson, making a highly scrutinized return to the primary squad, managed a solid sixth-place finish, but the overall mood within the Milton Keynes-based outfit remains tense as technical issues continue to plague their season.
A "Complex" Technical Struggle
In a candid post-race debrief, Team Principal Laurent Mekies—who took the reins after the departure of Christian Horner last year—confirmed that the team is grappling with an elusive flaw in the car's aerodynamic platform. According to Mekies, the RB22 is suffering from inconsistent car performance degradation that worsens throughout long stints. The issue has reportedly been identified as a priority, but a quick fix is unlikely as the team prepares for the upcoming street circuit in Baku. "Max is right to be concerned. There is an element of car performance degradation that is happening through a session and through a race. It is a complex issue; otherwise, we would have got to the bottom of it already.
