Max Verstappen secured Red Bull Racing’s first pole position of the 2026 season, marking a historic milestone for the team's new Ford power unit partnership. The Breakthrough in Sepang

After a grueling start to the 2026 Formula 1 campaign, Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing have finally found their way back to the front of the grid. On Saturday at the Sepang International Circuit—serving as the host for this year's Bahrain Grand Prix—Verstappen delivered a masterclass in qualifying to claim his first pole position of the season. The result is particularly historic as it represents the first-ever pole for the Red Bull-Ford power unit partnership, silencing critics who questioned the team’s transition away from previous engine suppliers. Verstappen was the man to beat throughout all three segments of qualifying, ultimately clocking a blistering 1m 35.130s to edge out his long-time rival Lewis Hamilton, who now pilots for Ferrari, by nearly three-tenths of a second. The performance marks Verstappen's first pole since the 2025 season finale in Abu Dhabi, ending a drought that had seen the team trailing behind the likes of Mercedes and Ferrari for much of the year.

Momentum and Technical Progress

The team’s success wasn’t limited to the lead car. Verstappen's teammate, Isack Hadjar, continued his impressive form by qualifying third-fastest. However, Hadjar’s celebration was tempered by a five-place grid penalty for a power unit change, which will see him start Sunday’s race from eighth. Despite the penalty, the raw pace of both RB22 machines suggests that the technical upgrades introduced recently in Baku have fully integrated, pushing the car's performance envelope back into title-contending territory. "It's fantastic. We’ve been trying many Grands Prix to get pole, sometimes a bit closer than others, but to finally get it from where we started the season, it’s pretty incredible," said Max Verstappen following the session. "I’m happy with today and for sure I’m going to try to win tomorrow. When you start first, that’s the target."

Setting the Stage for Sunday

Red Bull's resurgence comes at a critical juncture in the season. Currently sitting fourth in the Constructors' Championship, the team has faced an uphill battle against a dominant Mercedes squad led by Kimi Antonelli. With Verstappen starting from pole and demonstrating superior straight-line speed with a trimmed-out wing setup, the Milton Keynes squad is poised to challenge for their first victory of the 2026 era. All eyes will be on the lights at Sepang to see if this pole position is the spark that reignites a late-season championship charge.
